Suspect in El Jebel double homicide in custody

Police arrested William A Amaya, 33, early Sunday morning. He’s a suspect in the double murder of his aunt and uncle in El Jebel late Saturday night.

Eagle County Coroner Kara Bettis Sunday identified the shooting victims as Mayra Lorena Lopez, 40, and Eliseo Lopez, 42.

The shooting was reported at about 11:15 p.m. on Saturday at the victims’ home, where Amaya was also a resident.

The incident is still under investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office worked with the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, Glenwood Springs Police Department, Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, Basalt Police Department, Snowmass Village Police Department, Eagle County Special Operations Unit, AHART, Garfield County Emergency Response Team and The Vail Public Safety Communications Center.

Amaya is believed to have been renting a room at the home at 160 Arapahoe in El Jebel, which is part of unincorporated Eagle County in the Roaring Fork River Valley near Aspen.

A sheriff’s deputy reportedly arrived within minutes of the shooting being reported on Saturday night but Amaya had already fled the scene.
