CU ski team: This one's for Spencer

The University of Colorado ski team wants to bring a national title back to Boulder and the head coach said the season will be dedicated to Spencer Nelson, who died in a fall while hiking Aspen's Maroon Bells in August.

"It`s absolutely how we`re going to honor his presence with us," U.S. Ski Team head coach Richard Rokos told the Daily Camera last week. "We`re going to try to honor him by winning a (national) title. He was dreaming about it, and hopefully we`ll complete that goal."

The season is young but the Buffs are off to a solid start.

The team edged out the University of Utah at the Montana State Invitational over the weekend 921-912. It was reportedly the closest meet in Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association history.

The ski team brought the first NCAA title to Boulder in 1959 under the direction of then-coach Bob Beattie, who lives in Woody Creek.

In all, the University of Colorado ski team has won 17 national titles. The last three years, the team has been the runner-up to the University of Denver, which has the most titles, 21, in NCAA skiing history.
