Throw another log on the fire because this was the coldest day on this date on record in Aspen.

Temperatures plummeted 14 degrees below zero, shattering the previous record of negative 2 set on Nov. 25, 1992, The Weather Channel is reporting this evening.

The frigid air provided a nose-numbing contrast to the warm aroma of turkey, dressing and pumpkin spice that wafted through households throughout town on this stunning blue-bird Thanksgiving powder day.

The Silver Queen Gondola returned the masses to all of Aspen Mountain's glory as the ski season got under way. A similar story played out in Snowmass, where skiers and snowboarders gave thanks to the Thanksgiving Day bounty. Combined, the mountains served up 1,281 acres of terrifically snowy terra.

Tonight the low should be 1 degree. Mostly sunny skies are in Friday's forecast with a projected high of 30 and tomorrow night's low at 11. The high on Saturday is expected to reach 41 and the low could fall to 11. Snow is back in the picture Sunday and Monday with highs and lows of 29 and 22 and 19 and 16, respectively, The Weather Channel reports. Skies should clear up again Tuesday.

Along with Aspen Mountain and Snowmass, the lifts just got cranking over Independence Pass at Ski Cooper near Leadville. Telluride also opened today. Beaver Creek, Crested Butte and Steamboat opened Wednesday as did Sunlight down Highway 82 above Glenwood Springs. Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort opens on Friday.

Loveland, Arapahoe Basin, Wolf Creek, Copper Mountain, Keystone, Breckenridge, Winter Park, Eldora and Vail have been open for some time.

Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk are scheduled to open on Dec. 11.
