West Buttermilk estate sells for $31.5 million
An estate on West Buttermilk Road sold for $31.5 million Friday, setting a new high for a single-family home sale in Pitkin County this year.
The centerpiece of the sale is a modern Aspen castle, complete with stone walls, that sits on 44 acres along with a guesthouse, six-stall barn, garages and other luxurious amenities. There are competing reports on the main home's size but the county assessor's website has it listed at 13,550 square feet.
Joshua Saslove of Joshua & Co. represented the seller, local Internet entrepreneur Robert Zangrillo who records show owned the property under WBR Associates LLC based in Woodside, Calif.
Steven Shane of SDS Real Estate represented the buyer, whose identity wasn't revealed beyond the Aspen Grove Properties LLC with which he bought the property. The home was initially listed for sale at $60 million and then dropped to $47.5 million. What it eventually fetched — $31.5 million — beats out this year's previous big sale of a $24.5 million McClain Flats home to hedge fund manager John Paulson.
Records show Zangrillo bought the property from the Pfister family for $2.9 million in 1999.
Improvements to the land came later. The home wasn't completed until 2008.
