United adds direct daily flight between Aspen and Houston
But there should be even more “y'alls” heard around town after United's latest news.
The airline announced today that it is adding a daily nonstop flight between Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport and the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport beginning Jan. 4 and ending April 2.
But the passengers' accents won't be strictly Texan. Expect to hear more Spanish and Floridian dialect too.
“In addition to making it easier than ever to fly between Houston and Aspen/Snowmass, this new route is also going to offer superb connections from Florida and across Latin America,” Bill Tomcich, president of Stay Aspen/Snowmass, said in a press release. "Travelers flying the global route network of the Star Alliance will now have more connecting options into Aspen/Snowmass than ever before.”
The added flight follows United's recent decision to add a fourth daily nonstop between Aspen and Chicago and a second daily nonstop between Aspen and San Francisco. It will also fly 11 daily trips between Aspen and Denver for a total of 21 flights in and out of the Aspen airport this upcoming winter. That's on top of the four direct flights that Frontier will fly between Denver and Aspen.
"The addition of Houston as a destination will open numerous connections for locals and visitors alike that have been challenging in the past," Aspen/Pitkin County Airport Director Jim Elwood said.
The business community applauded the announcement.
“We greatly appreciate United Airlines stepping up once again with even more new flights into Aspen/Snowmass and believe this new service from Texas will be mutually beneficial,” said David Perry, senior vice president for the Aspen Skiing Company's mountain division.
The flights, which go on sale Sept. 4, depart Houston at 9:18 a.m. and arrive in Aspen at 11:08 a.m. and leave Aspen at 2:35 p.m. and arrive in Houston at 6:05 p.m.
All of United flights will be operated by SkyWest Airlines with CRJ700 aircraft, featuring United First cabin and United Economy Plus seating, which provides more leg room.
Aspen's airport, three miles outside of town, is the closest airport to any ski resort in North America.

This is great. Good boon for tourism dollars into Aspen. Anything to get us all back on track.
